About Aleksander Doba Bench in Trzebież

A bronze bench commemorating the kayaker who crossed the Atlantic alone, unveiled in 2023.

The Aleksander Doba Bench in Trzebież is a bronze monument to the Polish traveller, placed by a walking and nature path called the Aleksander Doba Promenade. It was unveiled on 9 September 2023, the day on which Doba would have turned 77.

Who Aleksander Doba was

Aleksander Doba (1946-2021) was a Polish engineer, traveller and kayaker. He was the first person in history to cross the Atlantic Ocean alone by kayak from continent to continent, from Africa to South America, using only muscle power. He paddled around the Baltic Sea and Lake Baikal, and was the first to paddle along the Polish maritime border from Police to Elbląg. In a National Geographic poll he won the title of Traveller of the Year 2015.

The monument and the promenade

The decision to build it was taken by the Police town council in June 2021. The unveiling took place in the presence of the traveller's family and representatives of the town and voivodeship authorities. The bench stands by the walking route that bears Doba's name.
