Looking for a place to eat home-style food without overpaying? We have gathered milk bars in Szczecin and across the region in the Restaurants section. To start with, it lists milk bars and canteen-style eateries from OpenStreetMap: a few in Szczecin and the rest in towns and seaside villages of West Pomerania.

What is a milk bar?

A milk bar (bar mleczny) is a cheap eatery with home cooking, a tradition that goes back to the Polish People's Republic era. For decades it was where people ate a quick, inexpensive lunch, and the menu relied on simple, familiar dishes. Today some places keep the old character, while others work as ordinary canteens under a new name.

The section covers both places with a long tradition and neighbourhood canteens. What they share is simple cooking, home-sized portions and a visit that is not a big expense. For many people it is the best way to try everyday Polish food without booking a table.

Where to eat in Szczecin

In Szczecin the section includes Bar Julia on Mazurska, a Bufet mleczny on 26 Kwietnia, Kogel Mogel. Bar mleczny on aleja Wyzwolenia and Bar Gospoda on Bolesława Krzywoustego. There are also canteens such as Jadłodajnia Gastro on Witkiewicza. Each place has its own card with an address and a position on the map.

Beyond Szczecin

In Kołobrzeg, look at Jadłodajnia Lepirożek on Jagiellońska and Jadłodajnia Familijna Kwiatek. Kamień Pomorski has Zazik nad Fosą on Garncarska, and Gryfino has Bar Powszechny on Chrobrego. In Świnoujście there is Bar Bosman on Dworcowa.

On the coast, look in Dźwirzyno, Dziwnówek, Jarosławiec, Pobierowo and Pogorzelica, where a quick home-cooked lunch after the beach is easiest to find in summer.

How to use the section

Pick the town you will be in and browse the places on the list. A card gives you the address, and you can also find each place on the map, next to monuments and sights. If you are planning a day in the region, see Explore Szczecin for texts about the towns and the coast. The restaurants section will grow to include more kinds of venues.
