Cłowy Bridge in Szczecin

About Cłowy Bridge in Szczecin

A bridge over the Regalica on the site of a former medieval toll point, rebuilt after being blown up in 1945 and after demolition in 2017.

The Cłowy Bridge links the Left Bank and the Right Bank of Szczecin across the Regalica. It stands on the extension of Gdańska Street, before the crossing with Przestrzenna and Eskadrowa streets. The crossing has a long history, because already in the Middle Ages toll was collected here from ships and carts, and customs duty on goods.

From a drawbridge to a steel structure

In 1909 the German authorities of the city decided to build a drawbridge, and the work lasted three years. During the withdrawal of German troops in spring 1945 the bridge was blown up. In 1947 a temporary Bailey bridge on wooden supports was put up in its place.

The present structure has its roots in a decision of 1954. Construction began in 1955 and was completed on 23 April 1960. The bridge had a cable-concrete structure. Its technical condition worsened over time and in 2016 the crossing was closed. The load-bearing structure was demolished, and the piers and abutments were used for new steel spans. They consist of two segments measuring 14 by 100 metres, which were slid onto the piers with hydraulic jacks. The bridge was opened to traffic on 3 August 2017.
