A square in the centre of Szczecin with the building of the “Pleciuga” Puppet Theatre in the middle, formerly a sports ground and a small park, named Plac Teatralny in 2008.
A square in the centre of Szczecin, in the middle of which stands the building of the “Pleciuga” Puppet Theatre. It lies between Wielkopolska and Niedziałkowskiego streets and Wąska and Niegolewskiego streets.
From the 1870s the square served as a sports ground. After its frontages were built up with a school and townhouses its character changed, and after 1900 a small park on two levels was laid out here. After 1945 it consisted of two parts: one with trees and the other, lowered in relation to the street, with an asphalt pitch. In 2008 the square was built over with the new seat of Pleciuga. A fire-fighting water tank was also placed on the square.
In 1900-1945 the square was called Blücher Platz. After the war it was given the name Plac Gieorgija Żukowa (Georgy Zhukov Square). In 2008 the theatre company asked the City Council to change the name, and the block received its present name: Plac Teatralny.
