Szczecin
About Targ Rybny in Szczecin

Short street in the Old Town of medieval origin, rebuilt on the pre-war foundations of tenement houses.

Targ Rybny (Fish Market) is a short street, 49 metres long, in the Old Town in Szczecin, linking the New Market with Środowa Street. The roadway has a granite sett surface, and traffic runs one way.

From buttermilk to fish

The original name was Targ Maślankowy (Buttermilk Market), first mentioned in 1427. After 1540 the street was called Targ Warzywny (Vegetable Market), and from the middle of the 18th century the name Targ Rybny (Fischmarkt) was in use. In 1949-1950 the name Rynek Rybacki (Fishermen's Market Square) was used, and the historic name was restored in 1999.

Destruction and reconstruction

During the bombing of Szczecin in the 1940s the buildings of the street were destroyed, and the ruins of the tenement houses were pulled down after the war. In 1970 the Arkona Hotel was built on the east side, and was later demolished, and in the 2000s new tenement houses were built on the foundations of the pre-war buildings. On the site of the hotel a new hotel was completed in 2021 and the whole street was renovated.

Practical information

  • The street lies a few steps from the Old Town Hall and the New Market, so it is convenient to include it in a walk around the Old Town.
