About Bridge to Jaskółcza Island in Szczecin

A steel bridge from 1920-1921 over the West Oder, the only one in Szczecin to survive the Second World War.

The Bridge to Jaskółcza Island is a historic bridge over the West Oder, linking Kolumba Street with the island. It was built in 1920-1921 to a design by Hermann Scholl and is the only bridge in Szczecin to have survived the Second World War.

Construction

The span is a steel lattice structure with a maximum height of 5.1 m, joined with rivets. The surface was originally cobbled on a sand bedding, today it is asphalt. In 1925 a rectifier substation was built beside the bridge, on the island, supplying part of the tram network in the area of the Main Station.

Not to be confused with other bridges

The former crossing in the southern part of the island, used by trains running to the station, dated from the mid-19th century and operated until the track layout was rebuilt in 1869. A few dozen metres north of the historic bridge stands the newer Cable Bridge.
