Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Nętno

Nętno
About Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Nętno

A timber-framed filial church in the middle of the village of Nętno, with a tower of 1744 and a bell of 1729.

The Church of Our Lady of the Angels stands in the very middle of the village of Nętno, on a square surrounded by old houses. It is a small timber-framed church, built for an Evangelical community, today a filial church of the parish of St Stanislaus in Zarańsko.

Construction and tower

The church is a hall building, without a separate three-sided chancel, and the walls were built in timber-frame construction. The date of construction is described differently: Wikipedia gives the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries or the mid-18th century (with the mid-16th century also possible), while the heritage register gives the mid-18th century. What is certain is the date on the weathervane crowning the spire of the tower: 1744. The tower is set on the nave, the spire is covered with shingles, and the roof of the nave with tiles. The porch is added at the side. In 1869 the building was rebuilt.

The bell from Kołobrzeg

The greatest curiosity inside the tower is a bell cast in 1729 in Kołobrzeg by Johann Heinrich Scheel. It is decorated with two bands of acanthus-leaf ornament, and the Latin inscription names the founders, among them the commander of the Świdwin commandery and patron of the church, Ewald von der Goltz. Next to it once hung a second bell, of 1542, the work of a bell-founder from Stargard, confiscated in 1917. The empty frame that held it remains.

After 1945

The church was taken over by Catholics and blessed on 5 October 1945. In the area it is worth looking in at the Church of St Martin the Bishop in Zagórzyce.
