Wołczkowo
About Church of Our Lady of the Scapular in Wołczkowo

A granite church from the late 13th century with a gable decorated with a blind cross and a neo-Gothic tower from 1865.

The Church of Our Lady of the Scapular in Wołczkowo, in Dobra municipality near Szczecin, was built in the late 13th century. It is a hall building on a rectangular plan of granite ashlars laid in eighteen even courses, covered with a gable roof. The building is entered in the heritage register.

The building

In the east elevation the medieval gable has survived, with a blind niche in the form of a large cross, with two smaller pointed-arch niches below its arms and three slit windows lighting the attic. In 1865 the church was rebuilt: the elevations were divided by tall pointed-arch brick windows, and a brick, neo-Gothic tower on a square plan was added on the west. In 1900 the tower was covered with a tented roof with a lantern. During the rebuilding the Gothic portal in the west wall was plastered over.

Interior

The interior is a single space with a beam ceiling. Of the former furnishings the following have survived: a 19th-century Neoclassical pulpit, a neo-Gothic organ case, two fonts, a brass baptismal bowl with a relief of Adam and Eve, and a monstrance from 1913. The altar was funded in 1722. The Late Gothic and Baroque sculptures from Wołczkowo have been in the Archdiocesan Museum in Szczecin since 1987. The church was consecrated as a Catholic one on 16 July 1946. Among other churches in the area, in Dobra municipality, is the church in Dobra.
