About Church of Our Lady of Jasna Góra in Lubin

Neo-Gothic brick church of 1858-1862 on a rise in Lubin, with an ancient lime tree, the “Babki Proszalne”, next to it.

The Church of Our Lady of Jasna Góra in Lubin is a Neo-Gothic brick church, built in 1858-1862 on a rise on ul. Główna, on Wolin Island. Nearby grows an ancient lime tree, the “Babki Proszalne”, recognised as a natural monument.

A Neo-Gothic body on a hill

The church is oriented and single-nave, built of brick on a rectangular plan measuring 24 by 13 metres, with a chancel closed on three sides. The east and west gables have a stepped structure with blind niches. At the west rises a four-storey brick tower with a clock that no longer works, topped with an octagonal helm and with a portal with three steps. The pointed-arch windows give the building a Gothic character. The church was entered in the heritage register in 2007.

Interior

A wooden beamed ceiling rests on pillars that divide the interior into three aisles. Along the north, south and west walls run 19th-century choir galleries. The stained glass in the chancel was made in 1981 to a design by Irena Kisielewska: it shows Our Lady of Częstochowa with a view of Jasna Góra, St Peter as a fisherman and St Otto in episcopal vestments. By the entrance stands a font which the Wikipedia entry links with the time of the mission of St Otto of Bamberg and describes as made from Neolithic querns. There is also a 19th-century font of artificial stone.

A place of baptisms and the lime tree by the church

Originally a church of St Nicholas stood here, and in the 12th century St Otto was said to have baptised the inhabitants of Wolin in Lubin. The present church was consecrated after the war on 8 February 1948, and the parish was established on 25 December 1987. Next to it grows the lime tree “Babki Proszalne”, a natural monument with a trunk circumference of 750 cm, and by the church fragments of the former German churchyard have survived.
