About Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Cerkwica

Gothic parish church of the 15th century in the Karnice municipality, with a wooden tower of the 18th century and a Baroque altar of 1678-1681.

The parish church in Cerkwica, in the Karnice municipality, is a Gothic brick church of the 15th century. It has a wooden tower added in the 18th century and a Baroque altar of the late 17th century. The building is entered in the heritage register.

Form and history

The church was built in the 15th century on a rectangular plan. In the 18th century a wooden tower with a tall spire was added, and at the end of the 19th century a porch was added on the south side. The way into the interior leads through a portal with a pointed archivolt in which five arches recede gradually into the depth of the wall. There are also two side entrances, and the windows end in pointed arches. From the Reformation until 1945 the church belonged to Protestants. It was blessed as a Catholic church on 19 February 1947, and the parish was established on 4 March 1974.

Interior

The interior is covered by a wooden beam ceiling, and above the entrance stands a choir gallery with an organ case. In the chancel a Baroque two-tier altar with acanthus decoration stands out, made in 1678-1681 by the sculptor Martin Edleber and the painter Christian Basch. In the central part is a scene of the Crucifixion, higher up the Entombment, and at the top a figure of the Risen Christ. The altar, the pulpit and the font were donated by Steffen von Woedtke and his wife Dorothea of the Manteuffel family. The font dates from the 18th century. In the square by the church stands a wooden cross on a stone pedestal, most probably of the 19th century.

St Otto's Well

By the Dzwonnik church hill, not far from the church, there is a well at which, according to tradition, St Otto of Bamberg baptised in 1124-1125. More about it in the description: St Otto of Bamberg's Well.
