About Church of the Holy Family in Szczecin

Half-timbered church of the second half of the 19th century in Płonia, with an 18th-century tower and the grounds of a former cemetery with the St Otto lime tree.

The Church of the Holy Family is a historic church in the Płonia district of Szczecin, on ul. Klonowa. It was built in half-timbered technique on a stone foundation, and an older, wooden tower adjoins its west wall.

History and construction

The present church was built in the second half of the 19th century on the site of an earlier, 15th-century church. Before 1945 it was Protestant, and it was consecrated as a Catholic church on 25 January 1947. It stands in the centre of the former village of Płonia. The building is on a rectangular plan and is oriented, without distinct stylistic features, closed at the east end by a plain wall. The nave is covered with a three-pitch roof covered with plain tiles, and the rectangular windows are framed in brick. A sacristy was added on the south side in the 1970s.

Tower and interior

The wooden, boarded tower dates from the 18th century and is therefore older than the church. It is crowned with a conical, shingle-covered helm with a lantern, ending in a ball with a cross. A cast-iron bell from the end of the 19th century has survived in the tower. The interior is covered with a flat, plastered ceiling. On the west wall stands a wooden gallery with a panelled balustrade, supported on four pillars. The stained glass was made in 1979 by the Szczecin workshop of Bernard Ratajski.

The grounds around the church

The church is surrounded by the wooded grounds of a former cemetery, enclosed by a stone wall with four gates. A natural monument, the St Otto lime tree, grows there.
