About Church of St Anthony of Padua in Golce

Half-timbered church from 1664 in Golce near Wałcz, founded by Joachim Rüdiger von der Goltz, now Roman Catholic.

The Church of St Anthony of Padua in Golce, a village in Wałcz municipality on the Dobrzyca River, is a half-timbered church from the second half of the 17th century. It was built as a Protestant church and now serves Catholics.

History

The present church was built in 1664 on the site of a church from 1540-1543. The founder was Joachim Rüdiger von der Goltz, as confirmed by an inscription on a bell from 1670. The von der Goltz family owned the village from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century and protected Protestantism in the Wałcz land.

Form of the building

The heritage register describes the church as half-timbered, dated to the second half of the 17th century. It was entered in the register in 1961, and a second entry dates from 2010.

Nearby

In the middle of the village, on voivodeship road no. 163, stands a boulder commemorating the fighting for the Pomeranian Wall. The inscription says that on the night of 7 to 8 February 1945 the 11th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division fought heavy battles here during the battle to break through the Pomeranian Wall. Golce is also linked with the church in Karsibór, about 3 km away.
