Church of St Anthony in Grzybno

33, Grzybno
About Church of St Anthony in Grzybno

A Romanesque church of dressed granite from the 13th century in Grzybno, with a Baroque altar and a wooden belfry with a bell of 1892.

The church in Grzybno, a village in Chojna municipality, was built in the 13th century, when the village belonged to the Templars of Rurka. It stands on a small rise in the centre of the village and has kept its Romanesque form of dressed granite to this day.

The building

It is a hall building on a rectangular plan, with a clearly distinct rectangular chancel and a gabled roof. The south wall has a small porch with a metal finial on the ridge. The walls show traces of former openings: a walled-up narrow portal in the chancel, a walled-up portal in the north wall of the nave, and walled-up round-arched windows in the east wall. After the Reformation the church was used by Protestants and it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century.

Tower, belfry and interior

Until 1967 a half-timbered bell tower stood on the west elevation; it was then demolished. Today a freestanding wooden belfry stands next to the church, with a bell of 1892 bearing a commemorative inscription. The interior has kept a Baroque altar from the second half of the 18th century, a wooden choir gallery and polychromes on the ceiling beams. A cemetery enclosed by a stone wall adjoins the church. It was blessed as a Catholic church on 1 September 1946.
