Church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Cychry

Jana Pawła II 46, Cychry
About Church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Cychry

A church of granite and erratic boulders, built before 1250, with a Romanesque body, a polychrome Crucifixion group and a Neo-Gothic transept.

The Church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Cychry is one of the oldest churches in the Dębno area, built before 1250, probably founded by the Templars. It has a Romanesque body of granite ashlar and a group of Crucifixion sculptures from 1510-1520.

From the Romanesque body to the Neo-Gothic transept

The date of construction is indicated by the trace of a south portal with a semicircular arch. The church was originally rectangular and without a tower, and the west, south and north walls come from this layout. In the 16th century a tower mass was added, its lower part of erratic boulders, its upper part of brick. In 1758, during the fighting in the Battle of Sarbinowo, the tower burned down almost completely, and in 1768 a new, square one was added on the west side, which was rebuilt and plastered in 1838. In 1858 a transept and a chancel with a semicircular apse were added on the east side in the Neo-Gothic style.

Form and interior

The church is oriented, a hall church with a transept and a semicircular apse and a wide tower with a pavilion helm; it measures 30.5 by 21.65 m, and the walls are 1.3 m thick. In the porch a stepped portal closed with a shallow pointed arch has survived. Among the furnishings the most notable are the group of polychrome Crucifixion sculptures from 1510-1520, typical of the master from Barnkowo, a bell from 1770 cast in Frankfurt an der Oder, stained glass to a design by Irena Kisielewska from 1982, two brass candlesticks from the early 20th century and a Neo-Gothic font from the second half of the 19th century. Inside there are a wooden ceiling, a choir gallery with an organ case and side galleries.
