Church of St Stephen of Hungary in Barwice

Plac Wolności 7, Barwice
About Church of St Stephen of Hungary in Barwice

A neo-Gothic church from 1861-1864 in the centre of Barwice, with a tin font, 13 stained-glass windows and a Grüneberg organ from 1863.

The Church of St Stephen of Hungary stands on Wolności Square in Barwice. It was built in 1861-1864 in the neo-Gothic style with elements of the round-arch style, and the heritage register describes it as eclectic. It was consecrated as a Catholic church on 2 September 1945.

Architecture

The single-nave church stands on a stone foundation, and the walls are of red brick. The roof is gabled, and the gables are crowned with pinnacles. On the west side rises a slender tower with three clock faces and a bell. The chancel is closed on five sides. In the nave and chancel there are 13 round-arched windows with neo-Gothic stained glass.

Interior

A wooden broken ceiling is supported by two rows of wooden posts, and along the walls run galleries: two side ones and a choir gallery with the organ. In the porch stands a font made of tin. The high altar was made after 1945, and the new floors were laid in Brazilian granite.

The organ

The instrument was built in 1863 by the Szczecin workshop of B. Grüneberg. It has two manuals, a pedal and 13 stops, with mechanical key and stop action. In 2010 the organ underwent a major overhaul.

Nearby

By the church stand a monument to John Paul II and a commemorative boulder marking the 70th anniversary of the regaining of independence. A walk can be extended to the town park, less than a kilometre away.
