About Church of the Holy Trinity in Szczecin (Krzekowo)

A medieval church from 1261 in Krzekowo, rebuilt in 1729, with a Baroque altar and ceiling polychromy.

The Church of the Holy Trinity at Żołnierska Street 1a is one of the oldest churches within the boundaries of Szczecin. The first mention of it dates from 1261, and the present structure combines three building techniques: a granite body, a brick sacristy and a half-timbered tower. It is a Roman Catholic church, one of two in the city with this dedication, the other, Evangelical-Augsburg, standing on Łasztownia.

From a village church to a parish

The church was built in the second half of the 13th century in the centre of the village of Krzekowo near Szczecin, of erratic boulders, on a rectangular plan, without a tower and without a separate chancel. In the 14th century a chapel, now the sacristy, was added on the south side. In 1729 the church was thoroughly rebuilt: a brick-and-timber tower with a spire was added, the ceiling and roof frame were replaced, the windows were enlarged and Baroque furnishings were added. It became a Catholic church on 18 August 1949, and a parish church in 1973.

The interior and surroundings

Inside there survives a Baroque high altar from the second half of the 18th century (originally a pulpit altar), polychromies on the ceiling with scenes of the Annunciation and the Agony in the Garden and images of the four evangelists, fragments of wall polychromies, an organ gallery with a balustrade from the second half of the 19th century and a chandelier from 1745. Around the church stands a historic cemetery wall with a gate from the 15th century. From the outside, the granite body and the half-timbered structure of the tower are hidden by plaster and boarding.
