About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pyrzyce

A Gothic church from the second half of the 13th century, burned in 1945 and rebuilt in 1958-1966.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pyrzyce is a Gothic brick church of the parish of St Otto, built in the second half of the 13th century and later rebuilt. It stands on 1 Maja Street and is entered in the heritage register. In 1945 it burned down, and in 1958-1966 it was rebuilt.

History of the building

In the first half of the 14th century the church was extended into a pseudo-basilica of four bays and three aisles, with a chancel closed on five sides. In the 15th century an ambulatory round the chancel and chapels by the tower were added. The building suffered fires many times and was rebuilt. During the fighting for the town in 1945 it was burned, the vaults collapsed, and the walls of the body and the lower parts of the west tower survived. The ruined church was handed over to the parish on 24 January 1958. It was originally dedicated to St Maurice, and received its present dedication in 1961 by decision of Primate Stefan Wyszyński.

Architecture

The elevations of the aisles are divided by pointed-arch windows, portals and buttresses, and the openings are framed with splayed surrounds of ceramic shaped bricks. The tower has a tented helm and pointed-arch blind niches on several storeys, and on the highest, windowless one, clock faces. The interior has the layout of a pseudo-basilica with the chancel surrounded by an ambulatory.

Furnishings

Nothing has survived of the former furnishings. The most valuable is the triptych in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel beneath the tower: in the central part a relief of the Last Supper, on the wings four Baroque paintings. The church has two organs. The main one was built in 1963 by the firm of Eberhard Walcker of Ludwigsburg for a church in Berlin, and in 2023 it was brought to Pyrzyce. The side one was assembled after the war from elements of several churches in the area. Nearby stands the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
