Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Załęże

55, Załęże
About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Załęże

A Romanesque church of dressed granite from the second half of the 13th century, with a tower of 1857 and a cemetery gate from the 15th century.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Załęże, a village in Kozielice municipality in Pyrzyce County, was built of dressed granite in the second half of the 13th century. The heritage register describes it as Romanesque. Today it is a filial church of the parish in Tetyń.

The building

It is a hall church on a rectangular plan measuring 14.3 by 7.85 metres. It originally had no tower; a brick tower with a clock was built up above the western part of the nave in 1857, and its upper part is wooden, with a sheet-metal spire topped with a cross. A Neo-Gothic sacristy was added on the south. The east elevation shows traces of three walled-up pointed windows, and in the south-east corner a boulder with a mason’s mark in the form of a chequerboard is built in. The historic furnishings of the interior have not survived; the nave is covered with a broken wooden ceiling.

The site is surrounded by a former cemetery with a stone wall and a brick gate from the 15th century. On it stands a monument to those killed in the First World War, which after 1945 was converted into the base of a figure of Christ. It was consecrated as a Catholic church on 3 May 1954.
