About Napoleon Hill

An artificial mound in Szczecin raised in 1808 by French soldiers in honour of Napoleon I's birthday, with a Prussian cast-iron column on top.

Napoleon Hill is an artificial earth mound in Szczecin, in the Zawadzkiego-Klonowica estate, on the border with Pogodno, at the junction of Unii Lubelskiej and Klonowica streets. It is about 8 m high, and its diameter at the base is about 50 m. The top of the hill is wooded.

The mound of 1808

The mound was raised in 1808 by French soldiers occupying Szczecin, to mark the 39th birthday of Napoleon I. 12,000 soldiers were camped nearby, and on the emperor's birthday, 15 August, a fête with a military parade and a display of Bengal lights was held here. A column with a bust of Napoleon was placed on the top.

Deutscher Berg and today

In 1814 the Prussians regained Szczecin, named the rise Deutscher Berg (German Hill), removed the bust and set up a cast-iron column topped with an Iron Cross, with a plaque in honour of the German soldiers who fell in 1813-1815. After the Second World War the original name was restored, although it is not widely known among residents. The cast-iron column from the Prussian period has survived to this day; the finial and the fence with a chain on cannon barrels have disappeared. The mound is entered in the heritage register.
