Brodowski Park

Szczecin
About Brodowski Park

A forest park in the Warszewo Hills in Szczecin, laid out in the 1970s on the site of the former Bredow Cemetery, with natural monument trees.

Brodowski Park lies in the Warszewo Hills, on Słowicza Street in the Żelechowa estate in the Szczecin Północ district. It covers from 7.5 to about 10 ha and has the character of a forest park on a former cemetery.

The site of the former cemetery

The park was created in the 1970s after the site of the Bredow Cemetery was cleared. This was a pre-war complex of municipal cemeteries, the Bredower Friedhöfe, dating from the mid-19th century, extended in 1905, with a layout similar to that of the Central Cemetery. The cemetery was destroyed by Allied air raids in 1944. Bredow was the pre-war name of the neighbouring Drzetowo. On Słowicza Street stands the Church of Our Lady of Ostra Brama, a former cemetery chapel from 1911, and next to it a mission cross, a Marian figure and a stone commemorating the people buried in the former cemetery.

Trees and paths

The undulating terrain is covered with mixed forest, crossed by several paths. The old layout of the avenues has survived. In the old stand of trees, alongside common beeches, there are natural monument trees: pedunculate oaks with trunk circumferences of 320 and 350 cm, a sessile oak (334 cm), a red oak (392 cm), horse chestnuts, maples, and small-leaved and large-leaved limes. Also present are birch, hornbeam, ash, poplars, white willow, London plane, wych elm, as well as yew, swamp cypress, larch and thuja. A small stream flows through the park from north-west to south-east.
