A coastal lake on the Trzebiatów Coast, separated from the Baltic by a spit, a refuge for birds and a place for water recreation.
Resko Przymorskie is a coastal lake on the Trzebiatów Coast, separated from the Baltic by a narrow spit with a dune ridge. Its area changes with the water level and ranges from 553.9 to 668.6 ha. On the north-eastern shore lies Dźwirzyno, with a water sports centre and a sailing harbour, and on the north-western shore the colony of Rogowo, with holiday centres.
The lake formed when the spit cut off a former bay from the sea. The spit is between 0.3 and 1 km wide, and the dunes reach 16 m above sea level. Resko is shallow, with an average depth of 1.3 m and a maximum of 2.5 m. It is freely connected to the sea through the Resko Canal, so the water level depends on the wind and in storms can rise by 1.5 m. In 1949 an inflow of sea water caused a flood.
The lake area belongs to Natura 2000 as the Trzebiatów-Kołobrzeg Coastal Belt, and also to the Trzebiatów Coast special protection area for birds. 13 breeding species have been recorded at the lake, including four threatened with extinction, among them the greylag goose, the goldeneye, the bearded reedling and the red-backed shrike. During migration, flocks of grebes, coots, cranes, gulls, geese and ducks stop here, and the white-tailed eagle feeds here. Most of the shores are overgrown with reed beds, which are inaccessible and serve the birds as shelter. In 1933 the German ornithologist Artur Butz wrote about the lake as a bird paradise.
In Dźwirzyno, at the mouth of the Błotnica, a wooden water sports centre with a harbour was built, where pedalos and yachts are moored. The area is used as a base for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and the surroundings of the centre are a popular place for walks. In fishery terms it is a pikeperch lake, and the dominant fish species are bream, silver bream, roach and pike. Fishery management is handled by the Mielno Fishery Farm, which charges fishing fees, so before an angling trip its rules should be checked.
The spit is crossed by the international Baltic Sea Cycle Route (R-10), part of the EuroVelo EV10 network. A cycling tourism association from Kołobrzeg marked a 52 km cycle route around the lake, and along the eastern part runs the nature and history trail Ku Słońcu. South of the lake runs the red Coastal Trail (Szlak Nadmorski) for walkers, from Świnoujście to Żarnowiec via Mrzeżyno, Roby, Karcino and Dźwirzyno.
In 1180 the fishing village by the lake was granted to the Premonstratensians. In the past the Rega flowed into the lake, and on it stood the port of Regoujście, a rival to Kołobrzeg. In 1936 construction began on a barracks estate and a seaplane airfield of the Rogowo garrison, and seaplanes landed and took off on the lake. On the northern shore a concrete apron with runways leading towards the lake and the sea has survived. Until 2001 a large part of the lake and the spit was closed to civilians, because it was occupied by the military.
At the beginning of 1945 a German aircraft hit by Soviet artillery sank in the lake. According to the Wikipedia entry, a former commander of a Red Army unit suggested in a letter written years ago that the machine might have been carrying crates with the Amber Room. This is one person's hypothesis, not an established fact. In 1987 a Polish-Soviet expedition recovered parts of the front of the aircraft, some tableware, documents and ration cards, which indicated a flight from Königsberg, but it did not reach the other part with the cargo hatch.
In 2009 divers found parts of a German aircraft from the war. According to the president of the Rogowo Fort Museum Foundation, there are many indications that they were fragments of a Dornier Do 24 flying boat, which most probably carried 72 children and carers, evacuated in March 1945 from the nearby airfield. The victims of this disaster are commemorated by a monument erected at the beginning of the 21st century. These events should be approached with respect, because they involve the death of people.
About 2 km away is Port morski Dźwirzyno.
About 5 km further on is the Roby nature reserve.
