“The Gardener” by Lanie Robertson is a play about the meeting of two important figures from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: painter Claude Monet, co-founder of Impressionism, and politician Georges Clemenceau, twice Prime Minister of France. They spend several intense days together in Monet's studio in Giverny. Clemenceau has miraculously survived an assassination attempt, and Monet is going through a creative crisis and, instead of painting, tends to his garden. Heated conversations between the two friends lead the artist back to work, and under his brush, water lilies in every color emerge.
The play explores friendship, love, art, politics and fate, and asks how these things shape our hierarchy of values.
