Ignacy Jan Paderewski Amphitheatre

Koszalin
About Ignacy Jan Paderewski Amphitheatre

A 1973 amphitheatre in Koszalin with seating for 4206 and a rainbow-shaped roof, the stage of choir, cabaret and music festivals.

The Ignacy Jan Paderewski Amphitheatre stands in Koszalin's Amphitheatre Park (Park przy Amfiteatrze). It was built in 1973 and, according to the Wikipedia entry, was once the largest amphitheatre in Poland. The auditorium seats 4206.

How it came about

The designers were Marian Czerner and Andrzej Katzer, who were to design a venue for the Festival of Polish Diaspora Choirs, which had existed since 1970. They made use of the natural lie of the land: the complex consists of a building with a stage and an auditorium. The contractor was the Koszalin Construction Company (Koszalińskie Przedsiębiorstwo Budowlane). In 1975 Koszalin was to host the national harvest festival, and the roof was added then, designed by Jan Filipkowski, a professor at the Higher Engineering School in Koszalin. The gentle arch supported on stretched cables is meant to symbolise a rainbow, and the roof appears to hover in the air. A plaque commemorating the amphitheatre's patron is set into the wall of the building with the stage.

Rebuilding

In 2019-2021 the amphitheatre underwent rebuilding and a major overhaul, which the Wikipedia entry describes as a complete renewal of the structure.

Festivals and concerts

The stage hosts the Festival of Polish Diaspora Choirs every three years, and every year the Cabaret Festival (since 1995), the Generacja Rock Festival and the Disco Bandżo disco music festival. The venue is managed by Centrum Kultury 105 in Koszalin, whose website has information on concerts and events. The programme changes from season to season.
