About Kana Theatre

Alternative theatre founded in 1979, based in a tenement house on Piotra i Pawła Square, with an Edinburgh award.

Kana Theatre is an alternative theatre in Szczecin, founded in October 1979 by the theatre instructor Zygmunt Duczyński and his pupils. Since 1994 its seat has been the Kana Theatre Centre in a tenement house at Piotra i Pawła Square 4/5, next to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.

From a student theatre to a cultural institution

The company began as a student theatre, and its projects in student clubs were presented under the name Ośrodek Misteria. The breakthrough was the monodrama “Moskwa - Pietuszki” of 1989, shown at festivals in Poland and abroad. The show “Noc” (Night) of 1993 won the Fringe First award in Edinburgh and, as the first Polish company, also the Critics' Award Edinburgh International. After the death of its founder in 2006 the company completed the production “Geist”. Since 1 January 2007 Kana has been a cultural institution of the City of Szczecin and the Self-Government of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Festivals and the centre's activities

The centre is a base for productions, festivals, and cultural, educational and research projects. Each year it organises about 80 events for the residents of Szczecin and the region. The most important projects include the theatre and music festival Spoiwa Kultury, held since 1999, the OKNO International Theatre Meetings, and the project “In Search of the Identity of Place”, devoted to the history and present day of Szczecin. Since 2018 permanent workshop groups have also operated.
