Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Warnołęka

Warnołęka, Warnołęka
About Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Warnołęka

A filial church from the 18th century in half-timbered construction, Protestant until 1945, on a hill in the west part of the village.

The church in Warnołęka is a half-timbered building from the 18th century, standing in Nowe Warpno municipality. Until 1945 it served Protestants, and on 26 August 1946 it was blessed as a Roman Catholic church. Today it is a filial church of the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Nowe Warpno and is entered in the heritage register together with its surroundings.

Construction

The church was built on a rectangular plan, closed on three sides to the east. The walls stand on stone foundations, and wooden posts are set in the sill plate; beams connect the rails and braces, and the fields between them are filled with bricks plastered white. On the west side stands a tower, also of timber-frame construction, topped with a pyramidal helm with a ball and a cross. The windows are slit windows, the interior is covered by a wooden ceiling, and a square sacristy has been added on the north side.

Furnishings and surroundings

Of the old furnishings a pewter candlestick from 1740, a choir gallery and a bronze bell from 1727 in the tower have survived. The church stands on a low hill in the west part of the village, away from the road from Police to Nowe Warpno. The grounds around it were formerly a cemetery and have kept valuable old trees, which contrast with the black-and-white form of the building.

Nearby there is also the Church of St Hubert in Nowe Warpno.
