A 13th-century granite church with a wooden tower with a lantern helm and a bell from 1644.
The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Mierzyn is a medieval church in the centre of a village near Szczecin, in Police County. It was built in the 13th century, soon after the village was chartered, of regularly laid granite ashlars, in the transitional period between Romanesque and Gothic. The upper part of the tower is wooden, with a domed helm with a lantern.
In 1637 a fire badly damaged the church and the original wooden tower. Reconstruction was completed in 1644, and the present tower is wooden. The church was renovated in the 19th century and in 1958 and 1995, and the sacristy on the south side dates from the post-war period. The parish website states that the church, together with its churchyard, was surrounded by a stone wall and that it holds about three hundred people.
The oriented church was built on a rectangular plan, without a separate chancel. The tower is slightly wider than the body of the church, and its lower part is stone. The east gable is decorated with a blind niche in the shape of a cross, with four smaller niches beneath its arms. The windows bear traces of alterations, among them Romanesque and Gothic windows.
The Baroque high altar and pulpit date from the early 18th century. In the predella of the altar a painting of the Last Supper on wood panel has survived, and the panels of the pulpit are filled with paintings of the four Evangelists. The gallery from the late 19th century is neo-Baroque. A bell from 1644 has survived, cast by Lorentz Kökeritz, the maker of the bell for Szczecin's cathedral. It weighs about 350 kg and has a diameter of 83 cm.
