About Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Szczecin

Neo-Gothic church of around 1900 in Osów, with an 18th-century wooden tower, entered in the heritage register in 2018.

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is a small Neo-Gothic church with a wooden tower, located in Osów, a northern district of Szczecin. It was entered in the heritage register in 2018.

The old and the new church

The first, medieval church was built here around 1283 for the village of Osów, which Barnim I, Duke of Szczecin, bought in 1277. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it was pulled down at the end of the 19th century because of its poor technical condition. The present building was erected around 1900, and on 2 February 1947 it was consecrated as a Catholic church.

Building and interior

It is an oriented hall church on a rectangular plan with a chancel closed on three sides and a gable roof. In the east wall there are two Romanesque windows and three pointed-arch windows, as well as a blind niche in the shape of a Greek cross. At the west end rises a small, 18th-century, boarded tower on a square plan under a tented roof, with an 18th-century bell. A free-standing wooden bell tower stands next to the church.

The interior is a single space, with a music gallery supported on four pillars. A Baroque altar with a painting of the Descent from the Cross has survived, as well as a Neo-Classical twelve-stop organ with a case on a Baroque gallery. Nearby stands a memorial boulder dedicated to those who fell in the First World War.
