Medieval church of fieldstone and brick in Rusowo, with a massive tower with defensive features.
The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Rusowo is a medieval church of fieldstone and brick, dated to the 14th century. According to the Wikipedia entry it is among the oldest Christian churches in Pomerania. Today it is a filial church of the parish in Ustronie Morskie.
The church was built on an east-west axis, with the altar facing east. The walls of fieldstone and brick joined with lime mortar are partly plastered. The building is single-nave, on a rectangular plan, with an undifferentiated chancel. A massive tower with a tall pyramidal helm adjoins it at the west. Its size and numerous window openings indicate that it also served defensive purposes.
Two stepped Gothic portals lead inside: on the tower side and in the south wall. The church has buttresses but is not vaulted; it is covered with a wooden ceiling. After the war the walls were decorated with three old oil paintings, “Christ on the Cross among the Thieves”, “Pietà” and “The Tribute Penny”, which are today in the Museum of Central Pomerania in Słupsk.
