Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland in Łęczno

The Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland in Łęczno is a Gothic church from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, rebuilt in the 19th century. Formerly Protestant, it is now a Roman Catholic filial church of the parish of St Hedwig in Białogard. The heritage register listed it in 1956. Łęczno lies about 6 km south-west of Białogard.

Gothic origins and 19th-century alterations

Of the Gothic building the tower and the walls of the nave have survived, later raised, as shown by the sloping ledge visible inside. In 1867 the church was plastered, its eastern end was altered, and a sacristy in Neo-Gothic style was added on the north side.

Furnishings

Almost the whole former décor has survived, forming an altar ensemble: a Baroque high altar in the Flemish manner from around 1669, a Baroque pulpit from the second half of the 17th century, a Renaissance font, a Neo-Romanesque organ and Neo-Gothic stained glass from the 19th century. The church also has bells from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The church within the village

The church stands in the centre of the village, on a rise, in a triangular square with a grassy clearing and trees: ash, lime, horse chestnut and maple. The grounds are surrounded by a high stone wall, and on the south side of the path stand a bell tower and a modern wooden mission cross. The village also has two disused 19th-century cemeteries: a Protestant one and one by the church.

A cycling and walking trail around Białogard runs through the village. In the town itself, about 5 km from Łęczno, stands the Old Town Hall in Białogard.

Less than 4 km from the village lies Stanomino with the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
