About Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Borzysławiec

A neo-Gothic brick church from 1902, with a painting of the Holy Trinity on its wooden ceiling.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles in Borzysławiec is a neo-Gothic church of red, unplastered brick, consecrated on 2 December 1902. It stands in Goleniów municipality and is entered in the heritage register.

History and architecture

From the start the church served the Catholic community of the village, which was founded in the late 18th century. Before 1945 Borzysławiec (German: Luisenthal) was the only settlement in the then Naugard county with a mostly Catholic population. The building is a hall church, with a chancel closed on three sides and buttresses in the walls. The tower is detached from the body of the church, has arcade decoration in its upper part and a sheet-metal spire. The side walls have pointed-arch stained-glass windows.

Interior

A painting of the Holy Trinity decorates the wooden ceiling. In the chancel hangs a large wooden crucifix with figures of the Virgin Mary and St John, and the wall by the altar is decorated with images of Saints Peter and Paul. A wooden choir gallery, a chandelier from the late 19th century and a neo-Gothic font have survived.

The church was damaged during the Second World War and then fell into dereliction. It was established again as a parish church on 28 June 1957. In the churchyard lies Fr Albert Hirsch, parish priest in 1931-1944, who was murdered by the Nazis.
