Church of St Andrew the Apostle in Białęgi

Białęgi, Białęgi
About Church of St Andrew the Apostle in Białęgi

A granite hall church from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries in Białęgi, formerly a grain store, restored in 2006.

The church in Białęgi, a village in Chojna municipality, is one of the oldest churches in the area: it was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries of granite ashlars. For decades it was not used as a church, and that is what allowed its original form to be preserved.

The building

It is a hall building on a rectangular plan, with a gabled roof. To the west stands a tower as wide as the nave, preserved only to the height of the nave, and a wide arcade leads from its ground floor into the nave. The side walls have slender round-arched windows: four on the south and three on the north, and the east wall has three of the same kind, with a slightly taller middle one. The east gable is decorated with two semicircular blind arches. No trace remains of the side portals; only the west one survives, cut in the 19th century in the place of the original.

Store and restoration

In the 19th century the church was closed and for the following decades served as a grain store. Because of this it escaped later alterations. At the beginning of the 21st century the building was restored, and in 2006 it returned to religious use. The interior is covered with a wooden beamed ceiling supported by a wooden structure running through the middle of the nave. The former furnishings have not survived.
