Kościelna 12, Sławno
About Church of St Anthony of Padua in Sławno

Brick church of 1925-1928 in Sławno, designed by Diedrich Suhr, with a Renaissance triptych of the 16th century.

The Church of St Anthony of Padua in Sławno is a brick church of 1925-1928, one of the two Roman Catholic parish churches of the town. It was designed by the local architect Diedrich Suhr in the style of brick Expressionism, and the Wikipedia entry states that it served as an inspiration for later churches in Pomerania.

Brick Expressionism in clinker

The building was carried out thanks to the commitment of the first parish priest of the Roman Catholic curacy in Sławno, Father Franciszek Niering. The church was consecrated on 28 May 1928 by Josef Deitmer, auxiliary bishop of Wrocław with his seat in Berlin. It is a hall building of clinker brick, joined with the presbytery into a single whole, under a gable roof. According to the Wikipedia entry it was taken as a model in the designs of the churches in Dalęcino and Starnin.

The portal by Fritz Theilmann

The rectangular front tower faces the town centre. In its ground floor is a portal, the work of Fritz Theilmann of Kiel, with a ceramic bas-relief of St Anthony of Padua with the Child Jesus in the tympanum.

Furnishings

The oldest element is a Renaissance triptych of the 16th century from the workshop of the sculptor Józef Schnitzer of Frankfurt: five scenes from the life of Mary, from the Annunciation and the Visitation of St Elizabeth to the Pietà, the birth of Jesus and the Adoration of the Magi. When the wings are closed, a plant ornament and saints can be seen: John the Baptist, Lawrence, Catherine and Dorothy. In the windows there is stained glass with images of saints, among them Francis, Hedwig, Barbara and Otto of Bamberg, and on the walls there are 14 bas-reliefs of the Stations of the Cross. In front of the altar stands a cross with sculptures of Mary and St John.
