Church of St Joseph in Sokoliniec

28, Sokoliniec
About Church of St Joseph in Sokoliniec

Neo-Romanesque church of 1889 in Sokoliniec, with a bell tower of the 15th century, older than the nave.

The Church of St Joseph in Sokoliniec, in Recz municipality, was built in 1889 of stone. It stands on the site of an earlier 15th-century church, and the tower has survived from that time.

Nave and tower

It is a single-room hall, oriented, on a rectangular plan, with an apsidal chancel closed on three sides. The nave is covered with a gabled roof, pinnacles stand at the corners, and a brick porch was added on the south side. The square bell tower on the west side is older than the church: it was built in the 15th century. The walls of the nave and tower are plastered, and around the church the grounds of a former cemetery can be seen.

Interior and history after 1945

The interior is covered with a false wooden vault, there is a choir gallery above the entrance, and the chancel rises one step above the nave. The stained glass in the windows dates from 1972. It was consecrated as a Catholic church on 19 March 1946. About 300 m away stands the palace in Sokoliniec.
