About Church of St Stanislaus Kostka in Barnisław

A 14th-century granite filial church in Barnisław, with a Gothic gable, a rose window and a 15th-century cemetery wall.

The Church of St Stanislaus Kostka in Barnisław, in Kołbaskowo municipality, is a Roman Catholic filial church entered in the heritage register. It was built in the 14th century, the register gives the beginning of that century.

The building

The church is built of dressed granite ashlar, on a rectangular plan measuring 16.8 by 8.4 metres, covered with a gable roof. On the east side it has a Gothic gable with a pair of triple-light blind arcades, and in the west wall, above the entrance with a brick surround of three stepped reveals, there is a brick rose window. In the second half of the 19th century the church was rebuilt: a pointed-arch window in the east elevation was walled up and new windows with brick surrounds were cut. It was presumably then that the ceilings and floor were replaced and the west gallery and pews installed.

After the war and the cemetery

The church survived the Second World War without destruction, and on 14 November 1946 it was consecrated as a Catholic church. After 1945 the walls were painted and stained glass was installed in the windows of the east elevation. The church adjoins a medieval cemetery of 0.2 hectares, surrounded by a fieldstone wall from the second half of the 15th century. In the north part of the wall there is a late Gothic wicket with a passage closed by a segmental arch, and on the east side an entrance gate.
