Troszyn, Troszyn
About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Troszyn

An early Gothic church from the second half of the 13th century, rebuilt after a fire in 1873-1876.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Troszyn is an early Gothic building from the second half of the 13th century, rebuilt in the 19th century in neo-Gothic style. It was built of fieldstone and brick. In 1337 it is mentioned in the land register of Margrave Louis the Elder of Brandenburg.

History of the church

After 1534 the church was Protestant. In 1873-1876, after a fire, it was extensively rebuilt: a tower and porch were added, decorative portals, windows, gables and cornices were made of brick, and the nave was covered with a wooden vault. After 1945 it returned to Catholic hands, and in 1986 it was renovated and extended with a sacristy.

Layout and furnishings

The church has a single nave, with a distinct chancel on a square plan covered by a net vault. The tower on the west side is square at the bottom and octagonal higher up, with a pyramidal spire on triangular gables. A bell called “St Maximilian” (195 kg) hangs there, with a bas-relief by Adam Haupt, consecrated on 16 January 1983. Inside, the wooden ceiling, the choir gallery and the decorative 19th-century pews stand out. The whole site is surrounded by a stone and brick wall with a gate, planted with a lime, a horse chestnut and a plane tree. The churchyard contains gravestones of the von Finckenstein family.
