Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sarbinowo (Myślibórz County)

Sarbinowo 43, Sarbinowo
About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sarbinowo (Myślibórz County)

A Neo-Gothic church from 1825 in Sarbinowo near Dębno, with a tower designed by Schinkel, rebuilt in 1892.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sarbinowo stands in Dębno municipality in Myślibórz County, on a rise in the middle of an oval-green village. It is a Neo-Gothic building of granite stones and brick, built in 1825 on older walls.

From the Templars to Schinkel

The first church was probably built in the 13th century, founded by the Templars of Chwarszczany, and after the dissolution of the order the estate was taken over by the Knights Hospitaller. From 1405 the church served as a parish church. In 1758, during the Battle of Sarbinowo, the church was partly destroyed. It has had its present form since the rebuilding of 1832, and the whole is plastered, so the old walls are not visible. The tower was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and after a lightning fire in 1890 it was rebuilt in 1892.

Interior

The furnishings date from 1832 and 1840: a Neo-Baroque altar with a painting of the Assumption, galleries on columns and a Neo-Gothic wooden font. The former commandery of the Templars and Hospitallers nearby is recalled by the church in Chwarszczany.

Practical information
