About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Babin

A medieval church from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style in 1856.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Babin, a village in Bielice municipality in Pyrzyce County, was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The heritage register lists it as stone. Today it is a filial church of the parish in Bielice.

History and architecture

From the 16th century the church was Lutheran. In 1856 it was thoroughly rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style, with a semicircular stone apse added on the east and a square stone tower on the west, with a spire divided by an octagonal drum. In 1904 a fire destroyed the historic furnishings, and after the Second World War the building fell into ruin. Rebuilt, it was blessed again as a Catholic church in 1962.

The walls show traces of the earlier building: a walled-up pointed portal in the north wall, three walled-up pointed windows in each side wall and nine pointed blind arches arranged in a pyramid in the east gable. Around the church is the area of a former cemetery enclosed by a stone wall.
