About Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Łozice

Late Gothic church from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries in Łozice, destroyed in the war and rebuilt in 2006-2012.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Łozice is a late Gothic church in the centre of the village, in Kozielice municipality. It was built at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries of stone and brick. Today it is a branch church of the parish in Kozielice.

Destruction and rebuilding

After the Reformation the church was Protestant. During the Second World War the tower, the roof, the west wall and most of the south wall were destroyed, and for years the building remained a ruin. In 1993 it was handed over to the parish in Kozielice. The rebuilding, to a design by the Pyrzyce architect Mieczysław Lipik, lasted from 2006 to 2012.

Architecture

The building stands on a rectangular plan. The gables are decorated with pinnacles, and the east one has recesses. The nave is covered with a gable roof with a modern bell turret, and the interior has a wooden beamed ceiling and a gallery on eight posts. In the south wall a portal with a segmental arch has survived. Before 1945 the church contained a pulpit altar and a baptismal angel from the workshop of Hattenkerell of Moryń.
