Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rurzyca

Goleniowska 69, Rurzyca
About Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rurzyca

A Neo-Gothic brick church from 1906 with an unusual layout: the chancel to the west, the entrance to the east.

The church in Rurzyca in Goleniów municipality was built in 1906 as a Protestant church. After the war, on 19 December 1946, it was blessed as a Catholic one, and it was consecrated on 11 October 2020. It is a parish church under the dedication of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A reversed layout

The most striking feature is the plan, unusual for traditionally oriented churches: the chancel is on the west side, and the entrance on the east. The brick nave on a rectangular plan has a separate, square chancel. The Neo-Gothic character of the building is conveyed by the round-headed and circular blind windows, the paired wooden windows and the openwork brick frieze. The roof is a tiled gable roof, and over the nave on the east side rises a square tower with a lantern and a spire, in which hang two original bells.

Interior

The date of construction is placed on the wooden doors in the stepped portal. The windows with pointed arches have stained glass. The nave is covered by a wooden barrel vault, and the chancel by a rib vault. Of the original furnishings a wooden music gallery with an organ, pews, a crucifix from the late 19th century and a chandelier from 1906 have survived.
