Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Barlinek

Ignacego Paderewskiego 3, Barlinek
About Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Barlinek

A Gothic parish church of the 13th-14th centuries, rebuilt after the fire of 1852, with a star vault.

The parish church in Barlinek belongs to the Barlinek deanery of the Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamień. Construction began in the 13th century, and in its oldest phase it was a Romanesque building of granite ashlar. Today it is a Gothic church with neo-Gothic elements, standing on Paderewskiego Street.

History and structure

In the 14th century the church was extended in the Gothic style of stone and brick. After a fire in 1852 it was rebuilt with neo-Gothic elements. It is a three-aisled, four-bay hall building on a rectangular plan, with a two-bay, three-sided chancel. In the second half of the 14th century a brick tower was added on the west. From the oldest phase the lower parts of the nave walls have survived, along with the granite ashlar of the tower's ground floor and a pointed-arch portal from the first half of the 15th century. After the Second World War, on 1 December 1946, the church was consecrated as a Catholic one.

Interior

The main nave and the chancel are covered with a star vault, the side aisles have cross-rib vaults, and the whole is covered with painted decoration. In the porch beneath the tower stands a granite Romanesque font. The 19th-century pews, a neo-Gothic gallery with an organ case and an 18th-century crucifix have survived. After 1945 keepsakes from the Kresy (the former eastern borderlands of Poland) came to the church: a figure of Our Lady with the Child from the Church of St Anthony in Lviv, an 18th-century painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and a figurine of St Anthony with the Child. Lake Barlinek is not far from here, and next door is the Regional Museum.
