Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Baniewice

Baniewice, Baniewice
About Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Baniewice

A filial church from the late 13th century, formerly owned by the Templars and the Hospitallers, with a cemetery surrounded by a wall with two historic gates.

The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Baniewice is a stone building from the late 13th century, today a filial church of the parish of St Casimir in Swobnica. It stands in the village in Banie municipality and is entered in the heritage register.

From the Templars to the rebuilding in 1977

At first the church belonged to the Templars, who held the village, and after the order was dissolved in 1312 it passed into the hands of the Hospitallers. It was built of stone as an oriented hall church on a rectangular plan. In the 17th century it was rebuilt, and in 1851 Neo-Gothic windows were cut into it, which can still be seen today. A tower of board-and-batten construction was added at the same time, but it has not survived.

After the Second World War the damaged church was abandoned. It was rebuilt in the 1970s on the initiative of the then parish priest and reconsecrated on 10 December 1977.

What to see on site

On the outside the building is fully plastered. In the west wall there is an entrance portal with two stepped reveals, partly faced with brick, and the interior is covered by a broken wooden ceiling. No historic furnishings have survived. The greatest curiosity is the cemetery by the church, surrounded by a stone wall with two gates: a late Gothic one with tracery decoration and pinnacles, and a Renaissance one, topped with a gable of moulded cornices and pilasters.
