About Church of the Name of Mary in Worowo

A Baroque half-timbered church from 1707 with a wooden tower and 19th-century chapels.

The Church of the Name of Mary in Worowo was built in 1707, founded by Henryk von Borcke. The heritage register classes it as Baroque. It is a branch of the parish of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Bełczna, formerly a Protestant church.

Architecture

The church has a half-timbered structure on a rectangular plan, with an upper storey and a rectangular wooden tower. The windows are closed with a segmental arch. In the 19th century two chapels, with cornices and oculi in the gables, were added to the nave on the north and south sides. The whole is surrounded by the site of a former cemetery with a wall of stone and brick.

Interior

The walls are whitewashed and the ceiling is wooden and beamed. Above the entrance stands a choir gallery on pillars. Remains of an 18th-century pulpit altar, a font and pews have survived. After the Second World War the church was consecrated as a Catholic church in 1948, and in 1997 it was renovated and partly rebuilt.
