Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Derczewo

Lipiańska, Derczewo
About Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Derczewo

A 13th-century church of dressed granite, with a wooden bell tower, an epitaph of 1734 and stones with mason’s marks.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Derczewo, in Myślibórz municipality, was built in the 13th century. It is among the oldest religious buildings in this part of the region, and it has been entered in the heritage register since 1956. Today it is a filial church of the parish in Krzemlin.

Granite and a wooden tower

The oriented hall building on a rectangular plan is built of dressed granite. In 1691 the windows were rebuilt and a wooden organ gallery was installed. In the 19th century a wooden, boarded bell tower with a pyramidal roof and an octagonal lantern was raised above the western part of the nave, and a Neo-Gothic sacristy on the north.

In the west wall a pointed portal with two steps has survived. A similar, walled-up one is in the south wall, and above it a stone with an engraving resembling a Christogram is built in. In the south-east corner, in the seventh course from the bottom, a stone with a mason’s mark in the form of a chequerboard can be seen.

Inside

The ceiling is flat and beamed. Inside there is an epitaph of 1734 and two tomb slabs from the early 18th century. In the chancel, in place of the high altar, there is an arcade with decorated pilaster capitals. After the war the church was blessed as a Catholic church in December 1954.

Nearby

The parish church in Sitno lies about two kilometres further on, and the tower of the church in Krzemlin is less than five kilometres away.
