About Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Białogard

A brick parish church in Białogard from the early 14th century, a three-aisled basilica with a Baroque altar and an organ from 1775.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a brick three-aisled parish church in the centre of Białogard. According to the Wikipedia entry it was built at the beginning of the 14th century, during the construction of the town walls, and since 1954 it has been entered in the heritage register.

History of the building

The church was destroyed by fires several times, in 1506, 1517 and 1677. In 1838-1840 it underwent a thorough renovation, and another renovation was carried out in 1912-1913. In February 2022 a gale tilted the spire of the tower. During securing work a bottle with documents from 1910 was found in the ball under the spire: local newspapers, photographs and postcards with views of Białogard.

Architecture

The building is of brick, laid in Wendish bond on a stone foundation. It is a three-aisled basilica with a chancel closed on three sides, and the vault of the nave is supported by octagonal piers. A four-storey tower on a square plan adjoins it from the west. Its copper spire in Neo-Baroque form was erected in 1880.

Interior

The high altar is Baroque and dates from the early 18th century, and the pulpit from 1688 belongs to the classic Pomeranian type. The stained-glass windows date from the early 20th century, and the polychromes were made after 1945. In the church stands an organ from 1775 by the firm Marx of Berlin, rebuilt in 1913. The three present bells are cast iron and date from 1922, because the four largest bronze ones were taken down in 1917 for the army's needs.

Nearby

By the market square, a few dozen metres from the church, stands the Old Town Hall in Białogard. Further on, at a distance of about 600 metres, you will find the Church of St George.
