Church of the Transfiguration in Mielno

Kościelna 29, Mielno
About Church of the Transfiguration in Mielno

A Gothic church from the 15th century in Mielno, about 750 m from the Baltic, with a defensive tower from the 16th century, a Baroque pulpit and neo-Gothic stained glass.

The Church of the Transfiguration stands in Mielno on Kościelna Street, about 750 m from the Baltic in a straight line. It is a Gothic church from the 15th century, built of brick and fieldstone and entered in the heritage register. It stands on a small rise, around which traces of former moats have survived.

A Gothic nave and a defensive tower

The oldest part is the nave from the 15th century, and the tower is a century younger. The church was rebuilt several times, most extensively in 1856, when a chancel was added on the east side in the neo-Gothic style, together with a transept on the north side and a porch. The sacristy was added in the second half of the 20th century. The nave part has kept its Gothic character: it is single-aisle, on a rectangular plan, with a chancel closed on three sides, and buttressed.

The two-storey tower on the west side is massive, with a copper pavilion roof and a brick frieze in its upper part. The thick walls and narrow windows suggest that it also served a defensive function. Above the Gothic entrance portal two fragments of millstones are set into the wall, which in Central Pomerania occurs quite often in church and defensive walls. In the outer walls many worked stones can be seen resembling figures of people or animals. To the left of the main entrance sits a dark boulder in the shape of a seated bear.

Interior

The historic furnishings include a Baroque pulpit from the 18th century in the transept, with sculptures of the four Evangelists, a neo-Gothic font and sanctuary lamp from the second half of the 19th century, a neo-Baroque painting of the Ascension from the first half of the 19th century and two bells with an inscription in majuscule. In the chancel there are two neo-Gothic stained-glass windows from 1904, the Good Shepherd and the Holy Family. In the first decade of the 21st century nine new stained-glass windows appeared in the windows, depicting the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary and several other biblical scenes.
