About Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Wrzosowo

A Gothic church of brick and fieldstone in Wrzosowo, with a three-storey tower and an oak font from 1634.

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Wrzosowo, in Kołobrzeg County, dates back to the 13th century and was heavily rebuilt at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. It was restored in the 19th century but kept the Gothic features of its body. It was built of brick and fieldstone, and the walls were plastered. It is 23 m long and 11.1 m wide.

The body

It is a single-nave church on a rectangular plan, with a chancel closed on three sides and a lower sacristy on the north. On the west side rises a three-storey tower with blind arcades and small openings shaped like arrow slits. The walls are braced by buttresses, and the main entrance leads through the tower portal with four steps and a pointed trefoil.

Furnishings

During the wars of the 17th century the church was plundered many times, so few of its old works of art remain. Those that have survived include an oak font from 1634. The Baroque pulpit with figures of the Apostles went to the church in Mierzyn. The organ with a place for the choir was built in 1883.
