Drawbridge in Gryfino

Gryfino
About Drawbridge in Gryfino

A three-span truss bridge over the East Oder in Gryfino with a lifting section, built in 1911-1913.

The drawbridge in Gryfino is a road truss bridge across the East Oder along voivodeship road no. 120. It has three spans resting on concrete piers, and the middle span contains the lifting section.

History of the crossing

The first bridges over the East and West Oder, together with a causeway across the Oder floodplain, began to be built in 1306. In 1640, during the Thirty Years' War, the retreating Swedes burned the crossings. Later wooden bridges stood here, and in 1911-1913 they were replaced by steel ones. The bridge over the East Oder had a truss structure with three spans, 250 m long and 10 m wide.

At the end of the Second World War, in 1945, the middle part of the bridge was blown up, which cut off access to the Oder floodplain. It was rebuilt in 1955, and at the turn of 2006 and 2007 it underwent a major overhaul: it received a new asphalt surface and a new colour for the truss.

Does the bridge lift

The East Oder at Gryfino has navigation class Vb, which assumes a clearance under bridges of 5.25 m. The Gryfino bridge has 5.17 m, that is 8 cm less, so in practice it does not need to be raised.

Not far away stands the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and from the bridge the wide river valley can be seen.
