Hortulus Spectabilis Gardens

Kolonia Smolne
About Hortulus Spectabilis Gardens

A complex of themed gardens with a hornbeam maze and a 20-metre viewing tower, opened to visitors in 2014.

The Hortulus Spectabilis Gardens are a complex of gardens of differing styles and themes in the Dobrzyca area (Kolonia Smolne). Visits began in June 2014, and the project itself has been under way since 2003. It is the second garden of the same company, alongside the Hortulus Theme Gardens in Dobrzyca. The website suggests visiting both in one day.

Gardens and the maze

In the Four Seasons garden the space is divided into four parts, with gazebos referring to spring, summer, autumn and winter. There are also Anastasia's Dolmen, the Celtic Calendar, the Stone Circle of 16 stones on a circular plan and the Hydrangea Garden with a collection of sundials. The hornbeam maze was planted in April 2003 from 18 thousand seedlings. It covers 1 ha, its walls are 2 m high, and the paths together are over 3.2 km long.

The viewing tower

In the middle of the maze stands a 20-metre viewing tower, built in the form of a double strand of DNA. From the top terrace you can see the surrounding villages, windmills, fields and forests, and in good weather the Baltic.
