Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Łobez

Kościelna 3, Łobez
About Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Łobez

Brick church of the 15th century in Łobez, destroyed in the war, rebuilt by 1949 and re-Gothicised in 1972-1974, with a tower of erratic boulders.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a brick parish church in the centre of Łobez. It was built in the 15th century by the endowment of the von Borcke family (the heritage register dates it to the early 16th century). It is entered in the heritage register.

Three aisles and a chancel on buttresses

The church has three aisles separated inside by arcades. On the east it is closed by a separate, five-sided chancel supported by buttresses, and in the aisles the windows are pointed-arched. After the Diet of Trzebiatów in 1534 the church was taken over by Protestants, and in the following centuries it was repeatedly damaged by fires. In 1829-1831 a thorough renovation was carried out and a four-sided tower of erratic boulders was added on the west.

Destruction and rebuilding

During the Second World War the church was destroyed. By 1949 it had been rebuilt in a provisional form: the walls were secured, a temporary ceiling made and a roof put on. The consecration took place on 8 October 1948. In 1972-1974 re-Gothicisation was carried out. The plaster was stripped from the external walls, a Gothic portal in the south wall, plastered over in the 19th century, was discovered and reconstructed, the original shape of the windows was restored and stained glass fitted in them, and the roof over the chancel was lowered. The tower was raised by one storey and covered with an octagonal cap.

Interior

The furnishings are entirely modern. The nave is covered with a wooden ceiling, and above the entrance stands a gallery with an organ. The walls beneath the windows are decorated with biblical scenes in sgraffito, made by Kazimierz Bieńkowski. In 2014 relics of St John Paul II were brought into the church.

Nearby

In the neighbourhood, about a kilometre from the church, stands the Orthodox Church of St George, and a little further on the Roland Mound.
