About Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Moracz

A Neo-Gothic parish church of red brick from 1881-1882, built after a fire in an older church, with a 19th-century choir gallery and stained glass.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Moracz is a Neo-Gothic church of red brick, built in 1881-1882 in the centre of the village. It is a parish church in the Golczewo deanery, listed in the heritage register.

From a wooden tower to brick

The first mentions of a parish priest in Moracz date from the 15th century. In 1595 a church without a tower stood here, and a wooden bell tower was built in the cemetery. At the end of the 18th century the church was in danger of collapse, so a masonry body in half-timbered construction, filled with brick, was added to the surviving wooden tower with a shingle roof. This building burnt down in 1877, and the present church was built in 1881-1882. Around 1535 the church was taken over by Protestants. After the Second World War, on 13 October 1946, it was consecrated for Catholics, and in 1973 Bishop Jerzy Stroba established a new parish here.

Architecture

The church has a rectangular plan with a chancel closed on three sides. The nave is covered by a saddle roof, the chancel by a five-sided hip roof. From the west wall rises a bell turret with two pointed-arch openings for bells, one of which dates from 1882. Two entrances lead into the interior, from the west and from the south.

Interior

The nave has a wooden beamed ceiling, and the chancel is vaulted. Above the entrance is a 19th-century music gallery on wooden columns, with an organ case. In front of the chancel stands a Neo-Gothic stone font, and in the chancel an altar following the Second Vatican Council and a sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in olive wood. The three large windows of the chancel are filled with stained glass. In the side altars hang paintings of Our Lady of Częstochowa and of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and on the walls the Stations of the Cross, in bas-relief in ceramic.
